Anthony says she became pregnant after party

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Casey Anthony told a psychiatrist that she became pregnant with her daughter, Caylee, after passing out at a party when she was 18 years old, according to depositions in which the doctor said tests gave no indication that Anthony was mentally ill as she faced her murder trial.

The 25-year-old Anthony was acquitted last July of killing her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, in a trial that captured the nation's attention. Anthony didn't know who fathered Caylee, the psychiatrist, Jeff Danziger, recounted in a deposition that was unsealed by a Florida judge and released Wednesday. Danziger interviewed Anthony five times over two years but never testified at her murder trial.

"Two beers, possibly given another drug. Woke up passed out," said Danziger, reading from notes he took during an interview with Anthony in November 2010. "Don't remember anything at a party, age 18. This is how she said she got pregnant."

Anthony is serving a year of probation at an undisclosed location in Florida on a check fraud charge.

Anthony showed no evidence of mental illness and had normal results on a psychological test, Danziger said in the deposition. He described that as surprising, given her circumstances in the Orange County Jail as a suspect in her daughter's slaying. Her temperament was calm, cooperative and pleasant, he said.

"You would expect that would provoke some measure of distress, whether someone genuinely did it, whether someone was falsely accused," Danziger said. "If my child was missing and I was in jail being accused of it, I probably wouldn't eat and wouldn't be cheerful and wouldn't be able to read."

Danziger said he was reluctant to recount all the information Anthony told him during his interviews with her, especially allegations that she had been sexually abused and her contention that her father played a role in covering up Caylee's death. Anthony told the psychiatrist that her father had found Caylee's drowned body in the family's swimming pool, helped disposed of it and then covered it up. During the trial, George Anthony denied playing any role in Caylee's disappearance or death.

Defense attorneys said during the trial that Anthony's father molested her when she was young, and Anthony told Danziger the same thing. George Anthony vehemently denied the allegation on the witness stand and defense attorneys provided no evidence to support it.

"As he has repeatedly said prior to the trial, during the trial and after the trial he never molested any member of his family including Casey Anthony," George Anthony's attorney, Mark Lippman, said Wednesday. "He had nothing to do with the death of Caylee Marie Anthony including what happened to her remains after she allegedly drowned."

Danziger didn't want to become "a vector" of her allegations of crimes against individuals who may not have done anything wrong, he said.

Caylee Anthony went missing in summer 2008, and her disappearance wasn't reported to authorities until a month later. Hundreds of volunteers searched for the missing girl. Anthony lied repeatedly to detectives, claiming a babysitter had kidnapped the toddler.

Transcripts of the depositions had been sealed. But the Orlando Sentinel asked the court to make them public and Judge Belvin Perry agreed.

White House hosted “Alice in Wonderland” party

Was having the Mad Hatter over for a party a bad idea?

A new book reports that the Obama White House hosted an extravagant "Alice in Wonderland" party in the fall of 2009, designed by director Tim Burton and featuring actor Johnny Depp.

In "The Obamas," New York Times correspondent Jodi Kantor writes that the White House decided to downplay the expensive Halloween party over fears of a public backlash, since it was taking place during the height of the recession.

"White House officials were so nervous about how a splashy, Hollywood-esque party would look to jobless Americans — or their representatives in Congress, who would soon vote on health care — that the event was not discussed publicly and Burton's and Depp's contributions went unacknowledged," Kantor writes.

The party itself was designed by director Tim Burton, who helped transform the East Room and State Dining Room into a "White House Wonderland." More from the book:

"[Burton's] film version was about to be released, and he had turned the room into the Mad Hatter's tea party, with a long table set with antique-looking linens, enormous stuffed animals in chairs, and tiered serving plates with treats like bone-shaped meringue cookies."

"Fruit punch was served in blood vials at the bar. Burton's own Mad Hatter, the actor Johnny Depp, presided over the scene in full costume, standing up on a table to welcome everyone in character."

And though he had nothing to do with "Alice in Wonderland," Star Wars creator George Lucas reportedly sent along an actor playing Chewbacca to attend the party.

That was followed by a magic show for children of White House staff and military families.

White House spokesman Eric Shultz disputed Kantor's take, saying the event was not covered up for fear of public backlash. "This was an event for local school children from the Washington DC area and for hundreds of military families," Shultz said in a statement released to Politico. "If we wanted this event to be a secret, we probably wouldn't have invited the press corps to cover it, release photos of it to Flickr, or post a video from it on the White House website," he said.

Trump drops Republican Party registration in NY

NEW YORK (AP) — Billionaire businessman Donald Trump has changed his voter registration in New York state from Republican to unaffiliated.

A spokesman for Trump says the businessman and television host changed his affiliation to preserve his option to seek the presidency in 2012.

Special Counsel Michael Cohen said Friday that Trump could enter the race if Republicans fail to nominate a candidate who can defeat President Barack Obama.

He said Trump probably would use his substantial wealth to even the playing field with Obama's re-election campaign.

Cohen said Trump's commitment to hosting TV's "The Apprentice" will keep him from doing anything until May, when the show's season wraps up.

He said Trump filed his voter registration paperwork Thursday.

Poll setback for Putin's party

Electoral commission staff open ballot boxes in Roslavl, east of Moscow (4 December 2011)The ballot comes three months before the presidential election which Mr Putin is to contest

Exit polls in Russia's parliamentary elections point to a sharp drop in support for Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's United Russia party.

Polls for Russian state TV and the state-backed polling organisation showed United Russia got about 48.5% of the vote, down from 64% in 2007.

That would give Mr Putin's party 220 members in the 450-seat lower house.

Russia's only independent monitoring group, Golos, logged 5,300 complaints alleging violations of election laws.

Its party chairman said United Russia hoped to remain the largest party in the lower house of parliament, or Duma.

'Violations and fraud'

If the result is confirmed, United Russia could lose its current two-thirds majority which allowed it to change the constitution unchallenged.

Nonetheless, party chairman Boris Gryzlov says the party hopes to get a majority in the Duma.

Exit polls suggest the Communists will take second place, with about 20% of the vote.

"We have received thousands of calls from regional offices, confirming massive violations and fraud," said Communist Party deputy head Ivan Melnikov on the party website.

"Throughout the day, it was like receiving reports from a war zone."

The BBC's Steve Rosenberg, in Moscow, says if confirmed, the result will be a significant embarrassment to Mr Putin, three months before he is scheduled to run again for the Russian presidency.

He says opposition parties are alleging widespread fraud, including the stuffing of ballot boxes and voters being offered money.

Mr Putin served as president from 2000 to 2008 but was prohibited by the constitution from running for a third consecutive term.

Golos, whose monitors are not affiliated with any party, said its website suffered a cyber-attack.

The organisation - whose name means "voice" or "vote" - is funded largely by the US and EU.

Prime Minister Putin has accused foreign powers of meddling in election preparations, while Duma members have questioned why a foreign-funded organisation is allowed to monitor Russian elections.

Moscow police said more than 100 people were arrested at an opposition demonstration in the city centre on Sunday.
