Soldier dies 18 months after bomb

A British soldier from the 1st Battalion the Royal Gurkha Rifles who was injured in Afghanistan in June 2010 has died in hospital in Birmingham, the Ministry of Defence has said.

The soldier died at Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Monday, following wounds sustained after he was caught in a bomb blast.

His next of kin have been informed.

The deaths bring the total number of UK military personnel killed in operations in Afghanistan since 2001 to 395.

Lieutenant Colonel David Robinson, Commanding Officer of 1st Battalion, the Royal Gurkha Rifles, said: "It is with great sadness that I must confirm the death of a Gurkha soldier from 1st Battalion, The Royal Gurkha Rifles, who had previously been seriously injured in Afghanistan.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this very difficult time."

The soldier's next of kin have requested the customary period of grace before further information is released.
